Blue Jasmine has the allure of a dark comedy. It tackles issues of class, mental illness, and family. It ultimately tends more toward dark than comedy. The cast is incredibly strong. Cate Blanchett gives a very nuanced performance of a social climbing woman whose life crashed apart and is seeking to rebuild despite nervous breakdowns. Sally Hawkins is excellent, endearing and vulnerable as Jasmine's sister Ginger. Louis CK, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Dice Clay play the interesting cast of characters that are the men in Ginger's life. Alec Baldwin and Peter Sarsgaard are the men in Jasmine's life.
Cate Blanchett has a solid lead in the Best Actress race. She has already won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. Sally Hawkins is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, as is the Original Screenplay by Woody Allen. Check out Hawkins' earlier work in Happy-Go-Lucky, she won a Golden Globe and it is fantastic. I saw Blue Jasmine over the summer in my favorite seat of a movie parlor at Cinetopia. Blue Jasmine is now available on DVD and Blu Ray, OnDemand, on Amazon and at Redbox.

The Croods
Best Animated Feature nominee the Croods is a cute story about a cave family looking for a new home and seeing beautiful sights along the way. It held my attention better than Despicable Me 2 and there are some unique animation sequences, particularly in the beginning. The voice talent includes Nicholas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, and Cloris Leachman. Frozen is the anticipated winner of the animated feature category.
