Captain Phillips

The movie tells the true story of the Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking of the American Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean by Somalian Pirates. The script is based on the 2010 book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. While most movies based on true stories have critics about the accuracy, there does not seem to be any for Captain Phillips. Perhaps this is because it is based on a book by the title character. The producers of the film visited the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum to see the bullet-scarred, five-ton fiberglass lifeboat in order to re-create the boat for the set. The movie is very well done and due to the nature of the film it is at times difficult to watch the action thriller.
Tom Hanks was not nominated which is a shame. He gives a thorough and heartfelt performance. Barkhad Abdi who plays the leader of the Somali pirates is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Captain Phillips received six nominations including Best Picture, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Adapted Screenplay. The movie is not anticipated to win any Oscars.
